The Fairytale Collection

Creative Agency: Bessermachen designstudio
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Konnerup
Location: Denmark / Copenhagen
Packaging Contents: Chocolate
Packaging Substrate / Materials: paper

What do Bessermachen Design Studio and Hans Christian Andersen have in common? The short answer is that we both share a passion for a great story. A great story told in words, pictures and graphics. A great story interpreted in 9 wonderful, fairy-tale bars of chocolate.

The goal
Bessermachen’s goal was to reinterpret the Hans Christian universe, giving it a totally new slant in design and chocolate. But we wanted more than that, because we wanted to make it up to date and relevant. Not because we wished in any way to interfere with a unique piece of cultural history, but because the fairy tales are just as meaningful and relevant today as when they were written. Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are all about betrayal, greed, overweening ambition and love. When looked at through contemporary eyes, these themes still captivate and fascinate us.

The inspiration
We drew our inspiration for both the design and the chocolate from the fairy tales, which have so much to offer. In many respects, they represent an open book when it comes to understanding the very essence of Denmark. So this was a natural starting point when it came to merging design tradition with excellent ingredients.

The seduction
But Bessermachen also wanted to be seductive, obviously via a highly expressive packaging design. We wanted to create a premium look to match the premium chocolate, which Konnerup represents. What’s more, to put the finishing touch to this ultimate experience, the illustration on each bar of chocolate was based on a Hans Christian Andersen paper-cut, interpreted by Niels Ditlev. You see, once upon a time there was a wise man, who said: “Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.” Not to mention a little piece of chocolate.

Helmet Hair (Concept)

Creative Agency: DDB Copenhagen
Creative: Simon Higby, Clara Prior-Knock
Design: Simon Friis
Prototyping: MOEF
Project Type: Concept
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Packaging Contents: Bike Helmet
Packaging Materials: Recycled paper and cardboard

Jump on your bike, put on your helmet and look like Justin Bieber while cruising for the sunset.

This could become a reality, if Lego or Playmobil has the guts to take on the challenge of Simon Higby and Clara Prior-Knock. Two creatives from Scandinavia, whom have come up with the concept of the Helmet Hair. A project that has come a long way on sheer determination and creativity.

“44% of children surveyed don’t wear a helmet while riding a bike, they wanted to come up with a design that kids would want to wear without being forced, and this essence should shine through both product, design and packaging.” The prototype was made by Danish design company MOEF using 3D mapping and printing technologies. The project was used as case for Higby's master thesis as well as exam project for interns, but still only made it to the prototype phase.

The concept of the packaging is that "life is supposed to be fun." Kids can both have fun and be safe at the same time. The conceptual packaging showcased here, was meant to be played with. When a kid receive his or hers Helmet Hair they take it out of the package and put it on. When their "new hairdo" is safely secured on their heads, they can flip the packaging box inside out, and it reveals something extra. Maybe it turns into a police siren for you to put on your bike and become an awesome playmobil cop. Maybe it becomes the head of a mighty steed to put on the front of your bike, or maybe something else entirely. The idea was to incorporate known elements from the Playmobil or Lego universes and give kids the ability to put it on their bikes, have fun while biking, living out their imagination and be safe while they do it.

Carlsberg Copenhagen

Designed by e-Types, Denmark.

Copenhagen and Carlsberg share their history with entangled destinies. This shared history - geographically located at 56 degrees North latitude - is key to Carlsberg, thus the hommage.

e–Types has designed the 'Copenhagen' logotype and refined the label. The clear space surrounding the minimalist and clean logotype makes it appear even more minimalist – nordic in its essence.

The label text is typed in The Wave
