TAITA 40 (Student Project)

Designers: Karen Cedeño & Edwin Bowen
Project Type: Student Project
School: Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL)
Course: Final Degree Project
Tutor: Jefferson Romero M.A.
Location: Guayaquil, Ecuador
Packaging Contents: Playing Cards + Accessories
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper, Wood
Printing Process: Digital Print, Laser Cutting

“Cuarenta, more Ecuadorian than ever”
TAITA 40 is a set of playing cards and accessories for the traditional Ecuadorian game “Cuarenta”, inspired by the iconography and characters of the Huancavilca and Inca cultures, the last ancestral villages belonging to the coast and high land mountain regions of Ecuador during the time of Spanish conquest.

The color palette and packaging designs of the “Cacique” and “Inca” lines give the product a classic and traditional image. The wooden packaging preserves adequately the playing cards and its accessories, while the flexible lid allows to manipulate the items without any difficulty. The laser cutting technique in the wood besides the flexibility of the material, leaves an odor trace in the packaging, turning it into a characteristic element of the product.

As a final result we obtain an object that carries culture and traditions that pays tribute to the elements that have formed the identity of our country.

Flight Cards

Designer: Fonzie Cuaycong
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Flight Cards
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Packaging Contents: A Deck of Cards
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Air-Linen Finished Cards, Satin Finished Box
Printing Process: 4C Printing

It was always hard to separate "His Airness from his shoes. From the very first pair of Black and Red 1's, these sneakers have represented the evolution of elevation, and told the story of a player who never kept his feet on the ground.

This deck of cards is a tribute to the greatest basketball player–and the greatest sneaker legacy–of all time.

Each suit has a curated selection of Jordans featuring, arguably, the most important sneakers of Jordans legacy–the first thirteen. These thirteen silhouettes were the sneakers that propelled him to fame, and were designed and worn during the beginning and final games with the Chicago Bulls. The Jordan model relates to the rank of the card: ace is the Jordan 1, 2 is the Jordan 2, 3 is the Jordan 3, etc.

The design features my own personal illustrative style, while still giving tribute to the shoes and the traditional complexity of playing card design. Each suit icon resonate the details of specific Jordan soles. The card designs use details from Mike's decorated past on the court, on television, and in Chicago.

In the deck, the ace and number cards have a consistent design with interchanging sneakers, while the jack, queen, and king each have a separate design. This is similar to how hierarchy is created in traditional playing cards, by using a visually-specific design for face cards and number cards.

Thinky (Student Project)

Designer: Jisu Hwang
Project Type: Student Project
School: Hongik University
Course: DESIGN STUDIO (4)
Tutor: Hyunkyoung Park
Location: Seoul, Korea
Packaging Contents: Children instructional tool
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper
Printing Process: Digital printing, Silk screen printing

‘Thinky’ is a brand of educational toys to develop children’s thinking ability. Unlike existing compulsory programs, Thinky helps to develop thinking ability naturally through games and plays. In this program, children encounter various types of problems, and they find out solutions through interesting activity themselves. In this process, children’s brain will be constantly stimulated, and thinking ability will be developed naturally and effectively.

In developing the brand, package, and promotional tools of these properties, I took the idea of ‘thinking’, which is the core of children’s education, as a motif. This motif has been expanded and branded 'Thinky' in the sense of 'imaginative and thoughtful child'. In addition, in order to take advantage of the characteristics of this product, I came out with BI and package design that can be visually appealing to children. This will increase the interest of children in learning and also will improve their learning more effectively. Furthermore, I have developed various characters for such purpose, for children to interact naturally with the characters.

Berghain ze Game

Design: Joakim Bergkvist for Ninja Print
Creative Director: Alexander Kandiloros
Project Type: Concept
Location: Göteborg, Sweden
Packaging Contents: Card Game
Packaging Materials: Paper

All kinds of people are standing in line trying to get into Berghain, Berlin’s and probably the world’s most notorious night club. Notorious not only for being a one of kind experience but also for it’s difficult to define door policy. Many have stood in line for hours only to be politely turned away once they reach the door and there are countless theories on what it takes to be guaranteed entry.

In Berghain ze Game you assume the role of the pointer of this legendary establishment and it is your job to foster the right mix. Let the right people in, outshine your colleagues and win the game!

Behind the project are two swedes – game developer and publisher Alexander Kandiloros and graphic designer and illustrator Joakim Bergkvist. It started as a joke but soon developed into a serious effort to make a quality game paying homage to the world's number one techno palace. Now they are looking to fund the project through Kickstarter.

The game design is very much inspired by the unique characteristics of the venue and it’s diverse spectrum of patrons. The packaging is based on the contrast between the raw industrial feel of the place itself and the thought through self-expressive looks of it’s visitors. It comes in a corrugated cardboard box with a stylized image of the iconic industrial Berghain building. A holographic foil label on the top lid adds some style, elegance and fun to the otherwise raw impression. The line of cards represent different club goers illustrated in a simple yet surrealistic humorous style. Since the story of Berghain began long ago with a gay fetish and techno club called Ostgut and still today has this heritage as an integral part of it’s identity, the best cards to acquire in the game are the gay ones.

Ritjakten

Designer: Frida Clerhage
Creative Director: Alexander Kandiloros
Illustrator: Clara-Cecilia Dias-Taguatinga
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Ninja Print
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Packaging Contents: Board Game
Packaging Materials: Mostly paper (and a plastic tray)

Ritjakten is a Swedish circus-themed board game for the whole family, where players draw and guess to win the game. The goal was to make a product that families will want to display in their homes, rather than hide away after playing (as is what most people do with most games). The design motto was "What would Wes Anderson do?"

Ritjakten is playable with young children who can't read yet as well: Children get an advantage both when drawing and guessing. The red cards are illustrated with the name of what's on the card written underneath in classic Futura. This way, they can also be used as cue cards when not playing aiding in teaching children to read. When playing with young children, they also get a head start guessing: Both sand glasses are turned simultaneously, and it's only when the red 15 second sand glass is empty that grown ups can start guessing.

Product design and illustrations are by Frida Clerhage; freelance illustrator, artist and designer based in Gothenburg, Sweden. She's currently studying a bachelors degree at HDK school of design and craft. She has a soft spot for colorful patterns, graphite, ink, plants, and ”humanimals”.

Helmet Hair (Concept)

Creative Agency: DDB Copenhagen
Creative: Simon Higby, Clara Prior-Knock
Design: Simon Friis
Prototyping: MOEF
Project Type: Concept
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Packaging Contents: Bike Helmet
Packaging Materials: Recycled paper and cardboard

Jump on your bike, put on your helmet and look like Justin Bieber while cruising for the sunset.

This could become a reality, if Lego or Playmobil has the guts to take on the challenge of Simon Higby and Clara Prior-Knock. Two creatives from Scandinavia, whom have come up with the concept of the Helmet Hair. A project that has come a long way on sheer determination and creativity.

“44% of children surveyed don’t wear a helmet while riding a bike, they wanted to come up with a design that kids would want to wear without being forced, and this essence should shine through both product, design and packaging.” The prototype was made by Danish design company MOEF using 3D mapping and printing technologies. The project was used as case for Higby's master thesis as well as exam project for interns, but still only made it to the prototype phase.

The concept of the packaging is that "life is supposed to be fun." Kids can both have fun and be safe at the same time. The conceptual packaging showcased here, was meant to be played with. When a kid receive his or hers Helmet Hair they take it out of the package and put it on. When their "new hairdo" is safely secured on their heads, they can flip the packaging box inside out, and it reveals something extra. Maybe it turns into a police siren for you to put on your bike and become an awesome playmobil cop. Maybe it becomes the head of a mighty steed to put on the front of your bike, or maybe something else entirely. The idea was to incorporate known elements from the Playmobil or Lego universes and give kids the ability to put it on their bikes, have fun while biking, living out their imagination and be safe while they do it.

This is a personal project I realised for my girlfriends birthday.

It is a magnetic dress-up puppet, made out of printable magnetic foil and cardboard.
For the packaging I tried to use materials with a natural feeling to create a handmade-touch. As an inspiration I thought back to primary school when we made small cardboard puppets that could be dressed with paper clothes.

Force Energy (Student Work)

Designed by Jack Redmond, Ireland.

Need a boost at sports training? Force Energy drink, bar and multi-vitamins are the best way to stimulate your mind, body and spirit. Our delicious fruit and nut energy bar, tasty energy drink and nutritious multi-vitamins are a unique combination for the perfect power kick. Once consumed as part of a healthy diet, your mind, body and spirit will be fully recharged! For this project, I intended to create range of energy products that would appeal to teenagers and adults particularly those involed in sports activities. The three products could also be targeted at people who need a wake up in the morning or students studying for exams. The main design of the product range aims to promote energy thus the battery symbols. I was inspired by my old science books from secondary school especially the diagrams of batteries and electrical theorems.
