Tea Quiero

Creative Agency: Exit Communicatie
Creative Director/copywriter: Matthew J Phillips, Exit Communicatie
Art Director: Anieke Schrader, Exit Communicatie
General Manager, Benelux: Arnout Verbeek, Catunambú
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Catunambú
Location: The Netherlands
Packaging Contents: Tea
Packaging Materials: Paper

Love Tea? Then you'll love Tea Quiero

Catunambú is a premium coffee brand located in Seville. Their expansion plan had a focus on launching in the Netherlands with the objective of achieving market penetration through sales channels that included premium coffee shops, restaurants and large corporate and government offices. The challenge was made especially tough given the established coffee giants that dominate this market also offer a complimentary tea product to support brand acceptance, loyalty and customer preference. It was imperative that Catunambú offered a similar product portfolio in order to claim their place in the market.

Exit Communicatie created the Tea Quiero brand from the ground up. The name was seen as perfect - ‘Te quiero’ is Spanish for 'I love you'. The brand identity and packaging design is inspired by the Andalusian tiles found in coffee shops and tea houses in Southern Spain.

All 8 flavours carry their own unique Andalusian tile design and all are named after areas within the region. Each individual pack carries a story of the tea, the blend and the place of origin – to enlighten and engage with the customer.

Tea Quiero is a unique tea brand, blended with organic and ethically sourced ingredients from Fair Trade farmers. Initially created to wet the appetite of the Dutch customer, it is now being enjoyed by people with taste, globally.

DIY Liquor Box

Designer:: Rachel Sender
Graphic design: Maatwerk
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Pineut
Location: Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Packaging Contents: Ingredient mix and gin
Packaging Materials: Cardboard, paper, glass

Pineut is a young Rotterdam-based brand that started off by offering bottles with different ingredients that customers could brew at home by adding liquor to. This year, Pineut has launched their own gin ("jenever" in Dutch) in a box that comes coupled with the ingredients you can mix the gin with.

Rache Sender was asked to make an eyecatching design for the box to stand out in liquor stores. It should appeal to a young crowd and should also work as a gift. The chosen direction was use of vibrant colours and a limited amount of them, just red blue and dark grey. The pattern shows a suggestion of the what the brew could look like when it's being mixed, in a joyful and playful way .

Illustrations were also made for the background of the "jenever" bottle label.

On the inside of the box the brewing instructions can be found. On the back there is a brief history of jenever.

Re-Veg Cold Pressed Juices (Student Project)

Designer: Vera Nieuwenstein
Project Type: Student Project

Course: Packaging Design
Tutor: Eric Nuijten
Location: Rotterdam, the Netherlands

RE-VEG is a brand that arose with the idea to solve these overarching problems. RE-VEG pays attention to the vegetables that are forgotten (historical vegetables).

RE-VEG lets the consumer get re-acquainted with these forgotten vegetables by making cold pressed juices. A way to make something old, hip again.

Because these types of vegetables are not mass production, they come from local farmers who have small harvest, which makes these cold pressed juices 100% organic.

This brand contributes to an feeling of because the consumer will feel that they contribute to the creation of a better world by saving the forgotten vegetables. RE-VEG will ensure that these vegetables return and will be retained with the idea that they may never disappear.

Vegetarian Butcher (Concept)

Designer: Laura Voet
Project Type: Concept
Location: Netherlands
Packaging Contents: Vegetarian products

The Vegetarian Butcher asked young designers to improve their packaging design. The goal of the Vegetarian Butcher is to get close to the taste and characteristics of real meat, also in their packaging design.

In the existing logo of the Vegetarian Butcher, the woman is wearing an orange striped apron. I used the stripes of the apron as inspiration and translated it into the design of the packaging. I added the color green into the serie. Green is the color of nature and refers to the origin of the product: vegetable. The green color creates contrast with the meat so that the colors of the product looks better. I also added an illustration to the packaging to show the costumer where the product is made from. This because not all consumers are familiar with lupine.

The vacuum packaging is transparent, simple but decisive. I'm inspired by the method of a real butcher. I wanted to stay close to the source and the authentic look and link to 'butcher'. Besides that, the consumers wants to see what they are buying, especially if you want vegetarian products compete with real meat products.

Bazar Coffee

Creative Agency: Sunshine and Sausages
Art Director: Lennard Freij
Copywriter: Paul van Vliet
Designer: Elmar Hamelink
Photographer: Michiel Meewis
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Bazar Coffee
Location: The Netherlands
Packaging Contents: Coffee

Wanna talk about it over a cup? BAZAR Coffee is the first Dutch hospitality brand to credibly claim its role as your ultimate conversation starter.

BAZAR Coffee needed an entirely new brand identity in order to revitalize its role in mainstream outlets all across the Netherlands. Competition was looming, while bar and restaurant owners seemed increasingly shifting towards brands with a spirited story and with credible relevance in connection to their consumers.

Yet as a product that nor intrinsically nor in terms of history offered tools for strong storytelling, BAZAR needed to shift its focus from itself to its consumer. The all new BAZAR Coffee identity is the first coffee brand to firmly claim its role as your ultimate conversation starter.

All design choices made, revolve around the creative concept that shaped the brand’s new and lighthearted identity. The overall impression and composition is peaceful, minimalistic and balanced. Chosen colors are earthly, modern and subtle. Fonts and materials are, again, about facilitating rather than asking for attention themselves. This scheme of design choices has been executed throughout all the brand’s identity carriers. From the logo (a coffee cup and a speech cloud in one), to packaging (staging product explanation, titles and numbers as actual design elements). From crockery (only reveiling the brand’s logo inside the cup) to website design (with photography staging consumers, pictured in right in the act of talking, as a center piece - while depicting product shots as a piece of art). From a brochure to side products’s packaging (milk, sugar, cookies, take-away cups).

BAZAR’s new appearance helped to put a halt to the brand’s churn and attract new hospitality outlets across the country.

Vrolijkheid

Creative Agency: Typical Organization
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Neleman
Location: Launched in the Netherlands, designed in Greece
Packaging Contents: Beer
Packaging Materials: Glass, paper

vro-lijk-heid (noun, Dutch) happiness, cheerfulness, cheer, gaiety, glee, hilarity, jocundity, jollity, joviality, liveliness, mirth, sunshine, tittup, merrymaking

Vrolijkheid® aims to be a new beer definition. Thinking of definitions we obviously thought of dictionaries. We approached the label design as designing a language manual. Since this beer edition is done in Holland by Nelemen, believed it relevant to make a reference to The Dutch Golden Age its freedom in press and typefaces that used to inspire William Caslon I (1692–1766) to design his serif typefaces. Using Adobe Caslon based on Caslon's own specimen pages we hope to give the fine detail and sharp contrasts that could make the beer sommeliers and amateurs transport to this acclaimed climate of intellectual tolerance that seemed to breath the Dutch Republic of the 17th century.

YVRA 1958 / L'essence de l'essence

Creative Agency: Durk.com
Creative Director: Durk Hattink
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: YVRA 1958
Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Packaging Contents: Perfume
Packaging Materials: Glass, cardboard & paper

Once an established journalist, Yvo van Regteren Altena became immersed in the world of fragrance houses and new scents. As a result of this exposure, renowned perfumers, including François Demachy from Dior and Jean-Claude Ellena from Hermès, encouraged him to create his own perfume. Yvo started this creative journey in 2013, which culminated in the launch of YVRA 1958 in 2016. The name refers to his initials and date of birth.

Yvo has extensive experience in collaborating with creative director Durk Hattink. The packaging of YVRA 1958 had to embody the subdued yet indulgent character of a niche fragrance with a high perfume concentration of 20%. Hattink was also requested to connect Yvo’s beloved 1950s era to the present using a nostalgic yet timeless color scheme and typography. Hattink: “Inspired by the citrusy nature of the fragrance, a muted shade of orange was the obvious color choice. If you look closely at the details of the box, you can see Yvo’s love for subtle striping.

However designing the flacon presented a whole new set of challenges. When I asked Yvo what our allowed expenditure was, he told me ‘budgets are made to be broken.’ And that is exactly what happened. Transforming the most precious materials into our vision of YVRA 1958 requires a high level of craftsmanship and commitment. Yet all the hard work paid off. During our visit to Pitti Fragranze in Florence, Chandler Burr, former New York Times perfume critic, called YVRA 1958 ‘extremely elegant and sophisticated’ and his reaction exceeded our wildest expectations.

Eternal Oceans

Creative Agency: Anthem
Designer: Sara Jones
Packaging Content: Canned fish
Location: Benelux

Eternal Oceans - Sustainable fishing for the future

Eternal Oceans promotes sustainably caught fish through disruptive and desirable packaging design.

The pack design uses the ring pull found on many cans and turns it into a brand asset. The whole can structure represents a beautiful silver fish with a ring pull tail which is both iconic and functional. Branding is simply embossed into the metal which brings a look of purity and premium cues to the pack.

Sustainable fishing is time consuming and costly, mass producers of canned fish are unable to be 100% sustainable and so we are perpetuating the ever diminishing population of fish.

Creative Agency: Sogood
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Packaging Content: Tortilla
Location: the Netherlands

A world first introduction of ‘No Fairytales’ with packaging by Sogood.

Bernadette Kooijman, founder and owner of start-up Switchback Foods: ‘I want people to eat healthier with good and delicious food. I have developed tortillas containing 45% of vegetables based on carrot and beetroot. A world first for which I was looking for and brand name and packaging. They should invite the consumer to try and find out that healthy food can also be tasteful. In the near future No Fairytails will extend the range of products.

Rob Verhaart, creative director at Sogood: ‘We developed the brandname ‘No Fairytales’ to make clear that Bernadette Kooijman is not selling hollow talk. Her products are honest, genuine and pure without unnecessary additives. To bring this idea across we developed a packaging where the product is still the hero. Champagne Extinguisher

Designed by Diddo, The Netherlands.

In may 2009 I was inspired the Jim Morrison quote: “I just want to get my kicks before the whole shit house goes up in flames.”

(Dom Pierre Pérignon (c. 1638–14 September 1715) was a Benedictine monk who made important contributions to the production and quality of Champagne wine in an era when the region's wines were predominantly still and red. Popular myths frequently, but erroneously, credit him with the invention of sparkling Champagne, which didn't become the dominant style of Champagne until mid-19th century).

John Altman Cookies

Design by Gummo, Netherlands.

We were hanging out on Baker Beach in San Francisco when we bumped into John Altman giving away free cookies. We were entranced.

It might have been the weather, it might have been the vibes, it might have been the intense combination of sour cherry and rich chocolate, but they were the best damn cookies we’d ever tasted. When we told John this, he said only one thing: “Spread the love. Like, make people happy, man. Take the recipe, bake the cookies, spread the love."

So that's exactly what we did. Our cookies come in 3 flavors: Sour Cherry & Chocolate, Green Apple & Almond, Grapefruit & Butterscotch. They are 100% natural, Fair Trade and delicious. Well, that's what people tell us. One guy we know loved them so much he called his children Grapefruit and Butterscotch. Now that's what we call spreading the love.

The outside of the packaging is made of uncoated paper, creating a fresh look that harks back to the bags that John himself used to use back in San Francisco. The bags are sent to retailers in a ready for display box that's fully recyclable.
