For Venatrix Framboise, Driftwood Brewery’s new addition to their Bird of Prey series of sour beers, we decided to embody the cute-aggressive character of a raspberry in a quirky illustration of a screech owl, her expression equal parts menacing and irresistible. The light-blue of her narrowing eyes glare through finely-rendered red-orange feathers. We chose a name that means “huntress," and gave her a voice in the form of a playful poem, ripe with neologisms in little berry-bursts.
Am the hunt. Under prickle-thickets, grasping raspberry bushels,
peck-picking pucker-sweet fruitlets by the bush-full. Am hunting.
Unripe, ripe, over. All a-screech with red words in the bird-light,
red-light of me. Then thornless in the after-now of no-hunt, plump
and plume, but am huntress, always-ever. Am Venatrix.

The Snowman, perhaps the most famous symbol of the winter season.
It's not just a great excuse to have fun with family or friends, but also an opportunity to show imagination and feel to the real creators. Snowmen can wear a funny hat or it can be wrapped with a warm scarf, broom sticks as the hands and of course to make it perfect, we need to add in a nose-carrot.

JDO develops ‘crossover’ craft beer for Marston’s
JDO Brand & Design has created a new brand identity and packaging designs for the Shipyard beer range, working with Marston’s who hold all rights to the brand in the UK. The Shipyard brewing company has been making award winning, hand crafted beer in Portland, Maine in the US for nearly 20 years and its collaboration with Marston’s began in 2013.
With the launch of the first permanently available Shipyard American Pale Ale in May 2013 and American IPA in 2015, Marston’s partnership with Shipyard has gone from strength to strength. Following the success of the brand in the UK, Marston’s identified an opportunity to develop the brand further and increase the range to satisfy the thirst of British drinkers for American craft beer.
JDO’s challenge was to unlock the potential of the Shipyard master brand through brand extension opportunities and a new look for the brand. The agency was briefed to make ‘Shipyard’ the umbrella to brand extension routes and communicate its authentic American heritage whilst making the provenance and collaboration with Marston’s clear. The team was also asked to give the brand more obvious ‘craft appeal,’ allowing Shipyard to become the entry point into craft beer for new craft consumers.
Shipyard had been sold as IPA in bottle and draught and as APA in draught only. Part of the brand task was to clearly differentiate the IPA and APA variants to aid consumer navigation of the range. The new range comprises updated designs for IPA and APA in their original formats as well as the new Rye Pale Ale in both bottle and draught. Further beer styles and additional packaging will follow.
Malcolm Phipps, JDO design director commented, “We’ve rooted Shipyard back into the craft category and kept it close to its genuine American heritage. It’s a great authentic craft beer and we wanted to fully realise the brand’s potential and capture the personality and the quirkiness of the range.”
Thom Winter, Shipyard brand manager at Marston’s added, “The Shipyard brand has been building a strong following and is a quality product with a great story. JDO’s new designs have allowed us to align the complete brand offering and provide a clear identity from which we can continue the brand’s development.”
The new identity and packaging designs are currently being rolled out across the UK in the key grocers, convenience stores and across national pub operators.

During December Flipside set themselves the exciting task of designing 12 ale labels leading up to Christmas. The design concepts are inspired by the 12 days of Christmas song, we didn’t set ourselves any rules when it came to the illustrations and design of each label. The only consistent element was the label shape, 12 ales of christmas neck badge and the bottle shape. The designs are visuals so no need for the legal requirements such as alcohol percentages and volume. This was a chance to experiment and demonstrate our craft, and investigate different ways of creating animal and people based characters, we had fun with a number of approaches; handcrafted drawings and elements, montage, iconic representation, visual puns, flat vector and line art, to name a few. The complimentary typographic solutions were also a chance to flex our creative muscle, with hand rendered and manipulated type together with simplistic solutions. We are looking forward to approaching breweries this year, and would love to work with one to develop a drinks range.

Lillevik Alpine is a new brand of apple cider based in Queenstown, New Zealand with strong European influences. Without artificial additives this refreshing cider has a perfect balance of sweet with a powerful flavour.
Concept
We’ve created a logo based around an attractive illustration shield. The design of the shield was inspired by the name ‘Lillevik Alpine’ that refers to a family holiday home in Norway belonging to the maker of the Cider.
Regarding the morphology of the shield we decided to work with lines, responding to the connection between Europe and Oceania. This is one of the main values that the brand has.
We wanted to reflect the origins of the maker, since the taste of the cider blends between a traditional European flavour and the freshness and modernity of Oceania. Our goal is to communicate an honest identity of a product with a simplicity that makes it great. It is important to clarify that the decision to create a shield was not based on defense or heraldry. The family’s memories and special moments in their Alpine house are reflected and commemorated in this small postcard.
There is a relevance and intention that underpins every choice. The typography, colour palette, label material and print finish, all give to Lillevik Alpine Cider an impactful and appropriate visual identity. We believe that the blue shield over the red background creates a personal and different approach in this product category that generates an impact on the street.

Since 2010, we’ve worked closely with Carlsberg fostering a great relationship most recently in our radical redesign of Carlsberg Export.
Despite the famous brew ranking better than competitors in blind taste-tests, Carlsberg Export’s brand perception was affecting its commercial performance. Despite boasting a remarkably rich brand history originating in Denmark – the country, which remains home to Carlsberg – their premium beer was struggling to stand for anything in consumers’ minds.
We were brought-in to dramatically re-imagine the Brand, elevate its premium beer status and champion its Danish origins – all of which we hoped would ultimately drive reappraisal and retrial with consumers.
Working closely and collaboratively with the team at Carlsberg UK, we embarked on a radical redesign inspired by Danish Design; famous for perfectly balancing function and form.
In order to stay true to our new Danish-centric positioning, for our design system we turned to Denmark’s national flag, known as the Dannebrog, to set the standard for Carlsberg Export. This bold, simple design provides a powerful, economic and aesthetically pleasing system that visually grounds the Brand in its Nordic roots.
Spencer Buck, Creative Partner & Founder @ Taxi Studio expands on our work: “Balance is something the Danes do brilliantly and it’s something that, together with the great team at Carlsberg UK, we’ve worked hard to capture in our redesign – by blending premium beer cues with Danish design aesthetic and marrying the warm with the cool, we hope this brave new direction for Carlsberg Export does Denmark proud.”
Darren Morris, Brand Portfolio Director for Carlsberg UK said:
“Throughout this year-long process we’ve taken a collaborative and consumer-centric approach. From identifying our differentiating Danish provenance to working alongside brilliant partners like Taxi Studio to bring our Danish heritage to the fore, we’ve had the consumer with us the whole way. We’re incredibly excited to share a piece of Denmark with the wider community”

Oitava Colina is a micro-brewery from a Lisbon neighbourhood called Graça.
I was tasked to develop a brand that reflects their origins. After that, I teamed up with the Portuguese illustrator and street-artist Gonçalo Mar to create all the packaging materials.
In their own words:
"To claim Lisbon as the City of Seven Hills, the same nickname given to Rome, Frei Nicolau de Oliveira ignored the Graça Hill, which was the eight hill of Lisbon.
This eight hill, where our Brewery Oitava Colina was born, is the place we get the inspiration to develop and produce our beers.
Through odd tales of characters that live in the hill side, we’ll show you that, like them, our beers have personality! Now we can put the question out... Who is your beer?"
This question (and brand's signature) is answered on the labels, which tell the story of each character and explains its relation to that particular style of beer. This storytelling is present all brand materials.

For Coast Mountain, a new brewery in Whistler, BC looking to celebrate the great outdoors, we were tasked with creating a brand that feels bold, adventurous, and dynamic. We decided to design a brand mark using hand-drawn letterforms with thick, textural strokes, rising to a rocky peak with the central “A.

Guinness Malaysia adds new dimensions to the iconic stout.
Famous the world over, the iconic Guinness tulip glass was designed to perfect proportions to pour the perfect pint. The signature glass every Guinness is poured in is as famous and iconic as the drink itself. Guinness drinkers expect their Guinness to be served ONLY in its rightful glass.
“To connect with a new crop of drinkers flooded with dozens of alternatives at bars, clubs and speakeasies, we knew that the world’s No.1 selling stout had to go beyond its classic appeal,” said Nick Larkworthy, Marketing Manager for Heineken Malaysia Berhad.
Guinness wanted to be true to their heritage, even while innovating with new concoctions. The ‘Guinness Signature Cocktails’ is a range of Guinness-infused cocktails housed in unique bespoke glassware as iconic as the drink itself.
Just like the famous tulip-shaped pint Guinness is known for, each cocktail comes in its own distinctive glass that hints at the bold cocktail combination inside.
"The fusing of two iconic glasses make a bold statement: the perfect pint is now the perfect cocktail," added Gavin Simpson, CCO of Ogilvy Malaysia.
Available as a limited edition set of three, the centrepieces of the Guinness Signature Cocktails series are the Guinness Espresso Martini, Guinness Black Velvet and Guinness Irish Winter Mist.
To launch the cocktails, Guinness is allowing people to mix their perfect brew on Instagram and find the Guinness cocktail that fits their palate. Test it out here at http://instagram.com/guinnesssignaturecocktails
It also introduces them to the larger family of 20 Guinness Signature Cocktails, complete with recipes - so drinkers can try them out at home as well as order it the next time they’re in front of a bartender.

Molto Bureau created a new packaging concept for Kazakhstan's premium beer “Pivzavod No.1”. The goal was to bind national identity adding some modern European design. Besides that it was decided to leave aside the name “Pivzavod No.1” and talk about the foundation date of the brewery and beer styles.
The key element for the case is the simple and well understood symbol – the sun which is main flag element of Kazakhstan. The sun associates with ripe hops and golden tone of the beer. The sun was placed on nominal horizon dividing the can in two parts. It was placed only foundation date of the brewery on the upper part to accentuate on key elements.
The lower part shows the beer style in different colors. Molto Bureau used well known for Kazakh people colors to emphasize on national identity and make them proud of the national product. The signature of brewery owner is used on packaging emphasizing his own responsibility for product quality and his being close to clients.
