California Olive Ranch

Creative Agency: Design Womb
Creative Director: Nicole LaFave
Photography: Kimberly Hasslebrink
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: California Olive Ranch
Location: San Francisco, CA / Chicago, IL
Packaging Contents: Olive Oil
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Glass, Paper, Aluminum

California Olive Ranch is the #1 brand of domestically produced extra virgin olive oil in the United States. The San Francisco Bay Area brand challenged us with seeing their redesign through on the brand’s identity and packaging design. In addition we delivered a library of brand assets which include a custom branded tagline graphic, flavor iconography, and packaging labels for an array of new products.

The new packaging design feels fresh, Californian, and is somewhat rooted back to the original labels to avoid confusion with loyal customers. To achieve this we designed a modernized interpretation of the rancher icon for the logo and carried over the existing color palette with subtle updates that feel vibrant and welcoming. The strategic use of a secondary color palette and special effects such as a gold foil, metallic ink, embossing, and premium papers helps draw a line between different product price points and keeps the branding cohesive.

California Olive Ranch's market share rose over 20% within the first 6 months of the new label and packaging launch in early 2016. The olive oil is sold at over 20,000 stores nationwide, including national retailers such as Target, Whole Foods, Costco, Kroger, Mariano's, Meijer, and more. You can also find their sample olive oil in Xela packs served in first class flights on JetBlue Airline.

Oleo Nutritional Supplement

Creative Agency: 2YOLK
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Location: Greece

OLEO, the first Greek olive oil to be marketed as a food supplement in the European market, is a remarkably high in phenols, organic compound with powerful antioxidant qualities that contributes to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.

OLEO was originally launched in the Scandinavian markets, a fact that played an important role in its design. The “minimal” visual language of Scandinavian design identifies completely with the pure, nature-inspired character of OLEO, which contains only exceptional olive oil from the olive groves of Ancient Olympia at the Peloponnese peninsula.

As an innovative food supplement, OLEO had to avoid the emotional clichés of olive oil food packaging and instead highlight its unique health claims. Its purity is highlighted through the earthy, warm hues of the untreated cardboard box and the embossed typography, while the custom cut-out element on the box signifies the flow of the olive oil and the seamless function of the human blood vessels.

Maya Serbie Honey

Creative Agency: PopArt Studio
Graphic designer: Terezija Katona
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Location: Novi Sad, Serbia
Packaging Contents: Honey
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper

Maya Serbie is a graphic project we did for a manufacturer from France who aims at promoting Serbian quality honey on the French market.

The brand sells different types of honey, such as acacia (miel d’acacia), flower honey (miel toute fleurs), and meadow honey (miel de prairie). For all three types of honey, we have designed an identical label in order to make it recognizable as a part of one and the same product line. The label consists of the Maya Serbie logo (+logotype), the name of type of honey, together with a corresponding color (yellow, brown, and scarlet), and a nice cut-out which looks like honey is dripping from the lid. Makes you want to eat it right away! Each jar also has a lid label with the logotype and the corresponding type of the honey, combined with its color.

This project was really special for us so we wanted to share it with Packaging of the World in order to promote our hard-working bees and the best honey in the region.

Just Great!

Creative Agency: Sophia Georgopoulou | Design
Photographer: George Pavlakos
Copywriter: Konstantinos Kontinos
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Just Great!
Location: Athens, Greece
Packaging Contents: Olives, olive oil
Packaging Materials: Glass, paper

The Brief
To create a brand identity for a series of some really great olive based products. The target audience is Greek and foreign costumers who value quality in their everyday life.

The Concept
Just Great! is one of our key and most dear projects in the field of Olives and Olive Oil. From the very start, it was quite clear that naming and brand identity for this brand could and should not follow the beaten path. The obvious way to deal with the new brand and its identity needs, would be to look into tradition and history for inspiration – running the danger though of creating something heavy and pompous. But this is not what we wished for.We wanted to create a friendly, approachable, everyday yet different brand. We wanted to talk about the pleasure and rich emotions that come to life when we come in contact with some really great Olive products.

At the end of the day, all these can be encapsulated into a spontaneous exclamation that comes effortlessly to one’s lips – Just Great!

The Logo & Packaging
Simple and to the point, the name also leads the design direction towards no-frills, stripped-down simplicity. A brand that does not talk down to consumers, Just Great! is about the core of the Olive experience - and nothing more.

The general color palette is inspired by the actual olives, the olive fields and in general the Greek landscape, bringing out the notion of Greek country-side. The fonts were "treated" in a way to enhance the feeling of handmade good since "Just Great!" entire business is a family business with a long tradition in olive production.

Kinky Fruit (Student Project)

Designer: Tammy Johal
Project Type: Student Project
School: Arts University Bournemouth
Course: Graphic Design
Tutor: Alice Stevens, Phil Jones, Marion Morrison
Location: London
Packaging Contents: Jam
Packaging Materials: 3D Printed

Kinky Fruit is a playful, quirky solution to reduce food waste. It re-purposes UK grown fruit and vegetables and supports local farmers by using their oddly shaped fruit produce that would have otherwise been thrown away. I created a unique jam range that I 3D printed, which celebrates wonky and twisted shaped produce that looks imperfect but tastes just as good.

Creating the brand, I wanted a more tongue in cheek tone so I decided on using the word 'Kinky' to represent the misshapen fruit and vegetables. As this project was hypothetical, It would be great to make the jam jars out of a material that would let the vibrant colour of the jam shine through such as glass or plastic. The raspberry and rhubarb prototype I created has the shape of the fruit as it's minimal packaging, so the range would have different shaped jars based accordingly on which fruit and vegetables are in each jam. This quirky packaging would stand out on supermarket shelves, looking more appealing and unique.
