Wild Health Warriors

Creative Agency: Arobase Creative
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Wild Health Warriors
Location: Cardiff, Wales
Packaging Contents: Herbal Health Supplements
Packaging Substrate / Materials: White PETE Bottle
Printing Process: Digital Printed Labels

OVERVIEW:
Wild Health Warriors are a Chinese inspired health supplements supplier. The range of products have various health benefits from boosting immunity to flu's, to helping the treatment of high blood pressure. WHW is a brand born in Wales, UK but its specialist herbal ingredients are sourced from Asia.

ORIGIN:
The business is the creation of two Welsh entrepreneurs who discovered the specialist health benefits of various Chinese botanics while one of the pair was battling cancer. He used the products on himself to keep active and 'healthy' while undergoing treatment and it had fantastic results. These products and their benefits were well documented in various research papers but this was far from common knowledge and many of the products were not widely available.

Before the business fully developed, the pair were distributing locally to friends and family on a try before you buy deal and the resounding positive feedback convinced them that they had something worth pursuing. While 'Wild Health Warriors' is an apt description for the defensive and combative health benefits of its product, the two Welsh businessmen are the personification of the brand name.

CHALLENGE:
Leaving the inspirational story out of the consumer facing messaging, our challenge was to create a brand, and subsequent packaging, that respects the origins of its product without being overtly ‘oriental' in aesthetic like many of its competitor brands.

SOLUTION:
Avoiding industry cliches and oriental iconography such as dragons, yin-yangs or Chinese logograms we developed a series of brand characters that would form the 'Wild Health Warriors'. Each character, with its own unique stance, is a subtle nod to the health benefits of its product. As for the logo, we created a Wild Health 'Master’ icon that was older and wiser in appearance and would become the face of the brand, acting as a 'seal of approval' on each of the packs.

We took a pharmaceutical approach to the packaging with an all white pack/label combination and relied on small accents of colour to distinguish product range and help provide a clear messaging hierarchy. The inclusion of hand written batch numbers and used by dates emphasise the small team/personal production of the supplements. The solid white PETE bottle is light impermeable and is essential to protecting the botanical ingredients used in the supplements.

Naphthalene Cubes (Student Project)

Packaging Form & Prototyping: Shubhrika Srivastava
Packaging Branding: Manali Chitalia
Project Type: Student Project
School: MIT Institute of Design
Course: Product Design
Tutor: Manasi Kanetkar
Location: Pune, India
Packaging Contents: Naphthalene Cubes
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Blister Packaging - Thermoformed plastic + Paperboard backing

We took this as an opportunity to design packaging of Naphthalene balls/ Moth balls which is an essential pharmaceutical product but presently have a very basic polyethylene sealed packaging. In our research study, we found that there are many issues that the user faces while using this product & it can be solved by making its packaging better & functional.

The very first thing that came to our my mind was....Naphthalene balls are always used in Nos. but packed & sold as per weight...quite a disconnect for buyer.

We also changed the shape of the product from spherical to cuboid....as the balls often rolls & displace themselves...also it bulges out when kept in between clothes for protecting them from moth.

The lack of branding and basic usage & precautionary information on existing packaging, gave us the scope of improving graphical elements as well.

With design which we are proposing, we have tried to provide a better, convenient and user friendly packaging for the product. Apart from the new packaging, we have changed its shape to cuboid & added different fragrances to remove the repulsive feeling that the buyer used to face earlier.

Beecheii

Creative Agency: Bienal Comunicación
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Beecheii
Location: Yucatán, México
Packaging Contents: Honey, medicinal
Packaging Materials: Glass bottles, wood boxes, hand painted

“Kaab” means both bee and universe in Mayan, this is the name given by the Mayans to the Melipona Bechei bee due to the capacity to restructure and heal.

This bee is known as the “Sacred Mayan Bee” which produces a significantly superior honey because of its beneficial property.

The apiarists have an extraordinary process and treatment with the bees, they are taken care of as part of the family. The boxes have special drawings and paintings made by children and these include words such as Love, Health, Peace, Faith, and Protection, following the studies of Masaru Emoto.

Likewise, all of the boxes have been blessed following the Buddhist tradition. They play music to them, and each carries a mantra.

The bee guards the entrance to the hive, which in Mayan means “Kalan”, and it is the fundamental component of the design, being represented in a fusion of Mayan esthetic and Oriental tradition with the Hanko sign. Also, the typographic Oriental art is found in the ensō zen and and the guardian bee is drawn with Chinese ink.

The Mayan- Zen Syncretism is the base of this project; valuable to its core because its filled with an antique tradition and long born origins. Each detail of the hive´s design embeds the following aesthetics: a complex communication process, striking benefits and a magical conscience that wraps around all of the products that come from the finest Melipona Bechei bee honey.

Insti HIV Self Test

Designer: Andrew Zo
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: BioLytical
Location: Vancouver, Canada
Packaging Contents: Medical devices
Packaging Materials: Corrugated Cardboard

Over the past year, Andrew Zo had the opportunity to work with Biolytical, a company based in Vancouver, Canada, on the world’s fastest HIV self test. Similar to an over the counter product, such as a pregnancy test, the INSTI® HIV Self Test can be operated completely by the user. The goal was an approachable design that can be easily operated.

A few key factors in creating Biolytical’s user-friendly packaging:

The packaging provides an operations area, which ensures the test can be self-contained during use. An opaque sealable plastic bag is also included for easy and discreet disposal.

Extensive user trials were conducted to validate instructions and diagrams. The manual was designed into a booklet instead of a map fold for a more user-friendly experience.

The psychology of the buyer was considered when creating the box graphics. A clean and minimal design was chosen to create an approachable look. The design opted for a calm turquoise colour scheme as well as a photograph of a hand, which indicates where the test will be performed.

Mineral Diet

Creative Agency: Studio DEZA
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Perfect Organics
Location: Russia
Packaging Contents: Calcium cocktails
Packaging Materials: Paper

Task
To create package design for Mineral Diet, calcium cocktails dry blend, distributed in direct sales format. The required associations are organic food, vividness, modern lifestyle; visual conciseness is preferred.

Solution
Because Mineral Diet cocktails are distributed through direct sales channel, we found out that most of the active buyers are women 40+, that is common for this type of sales. We also learned that women thoughtfully buy special products for their teenage children or wanna-be-independent students. Mineral Diet is the product for those who need calcium – teenagers, students, young women. And, of course, mother knows, what is better for balanced and proper nutrition.

We decided to use not quite standard approach to motherly advices – product “that Mom buys” is healthy, tasty and speaks in “cool” language of youngsters at the same time. Our cocktails are designed in pop-art minimal style, which stands way far from the boring format of usual healthy products. It reflects the lifestyle of young generation; the stylized craft emphasizes natural base of the product. In general the product looks like tasty and healthy cocktail to drink at the party with friends.

The color solution of the branded zone is general for all SKUs in the product line. Calcium and sea mineral complex "Aquamine" used in the product give associations with white color (calcium, chalk) and aquamarine color (water, sea, minerals).

Kola Premium Cannabis

Creative Agency: Hired Guns Creative
Printer: Hemlock
Photography: Sean Fenzl
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Kola Premium Cannabis
Location: Nanaimo, Canada
Packaging Contents: Cannabis
Packaging Materials: paper

For Kola Premium Cannabis, our goal was to create a marijuana brand that feels modern and sexy, with strong typography and subtle references to the iconic pot plant for an elegant secondary read. The name Kola, referring to the largest, tallest cone of a cannabis plant, is echoed through the placement of the word mark, budding from the end of a stem-like horizontal bar that grows responsively with the shape and size of each product. At the very tip of the brand, the spur of the letter ‘a’ unfurls with the serrate edge of a marijuana leaf.

The box of capsules shines with a bold area of beautiful holographic foil, blooming in prismatic colours out of a rich black background, the brand climbing around the corners for an engaging, wrap-around tactile experience.

Once A Month - Tampon Packaging (Student Project)

Designer: Olivia Chan
Project Type: Student Project
School: Dawson College
Course: Packaging Design
Tutor: Suzanne Cote
Location: Montreal, Canada
Packaging Contents: Tampons, Menstrual Care
Packaging Materials: Cardstock

A tampon packaging for an organic menstrual care company, Once A Month. They find importance in the environment as much as the female body. Once A Month aims to produce high quality products while taking the presentation of the most “taboo” product into detail as well. A minimalistic approach was used to create a luxurious feel because many women are still embarrassed to carry such product. In fact, in some countries tampons are considered as an actual luxury product because it is not accessible to all. Some women are able to synchronize their menstrual cycle to determine their next period, which is why little symbols of the moon are used to illustrate the heaviness of the flow of the packaging. Once A Month also wishes to create a community among women as one to share insight and tips for health and environment care. Hence the reason for the "1" in the front of the packaging, representing all these women as one big community and each and every one of the women to hopefully make a difference.

Pharmacy Brand (Repackaged)

Designed by Mairead Alwell, United Kingdom.

Pharmacy Brand had not updated it's packaging since it was established in the 1980's. It lacked clarity and had poor shelf presence. The challenge was to retain the heritage of the brand while making the range of 26 SKUs easy to navigate and easy to recognise for the consumer.

Graphic illustrations of the traditional chalice and snake symbols created a fresh, clean identity. While retaining the original brown pharmacy bottles ensured the simple, unprocessed, medical message remained. Simple, bright colour coding for the four categories (oils, beauty, medicinal and misc.) and a template that can easily work across all bottle and tub sizes create a strong family look.

Less than 30% of Americans are registered organ donors. The Food Doctor

Designed by Pearlfisher, United Kingdom.

Pearlfisher has created a new brand identity – and redesigned the packaging across the entire range – for the UK’s leading nutrition consultancy The Food Doctor.

Co-founded in 1999 by Ian Marber, a leading nutritionist and acknowledged expert in his field, The Food Doctor is a unique concept that provides sensible advice for achieving a healthier plan for life. From the start it established itself as a visible brand in the field of healthier eating with a range of food products from seed mixes to ready meals.

The new identity needed to embrace the ‘Eat better forever’ strapline and move the brand focus from a functional product to more of a lifestyle proposition.

Pearlfisher Creative Director, Natalie Chung, explains, “We have created a memorable symbol which bonds food & health together in a wholesome, tasty icon – the apple. The apple reflects the brand journey from seed to life and provides an inspirational identity for future celebration and growth to communicate the core truth of The Food Doctor philosophy – that this is a way of life and not a fad, nor a diet.”

Natalie continues, “The language throughout is both simple and informative, empowering consumers with the knowledge they need to understand their food and truly love their bodies. The use of colour across the range builds this message by injecting the brand with a sense of continuous energy and positivity.”

Michael da Costa, Managing Director of The Food Doctor, says “We looked at what is happening in the health food aisles and the changes in consumer behaviour and had a think about how to grow the brand and communicate The Food Doctor’s key messages to shoppers. This has successfully been achieved by Pearlfisher, who have really captured the essence of the brand in terms of consumers’ priorities for health, and by our licensing partners with exciting NPD and flavourful foods that fit in with everyday lifestyle”.

OrganiCann Compostable Packaging

OrganiCann Introduces the World’s First Home Compostable Medical Cannabis Packaging

Marijuana just got greener. OrganiCann’s sustainably grown, organic, medical cannabis is now available in environmentally friendly packaging that you can compost in your own back yard.

The Organic cannabis Foundation, LLC (OrganiCann), the largest medical cannabis dispensing collective in Northern California, announced exciting new home compostable packaging.

OrganiCann’s new packaging is made from certified-compostable film printed with water-based inks. The compostable film is made from sustainably produced wood. OrganiCann’s packaging safely biodegrades in home or commercial compost. It will even biodegrade in a wastewater environment.

“At OrganiCann, we are committed to sustainability in everything we do,” said Dona Ruth Frank, Managing Member of OrganiCann. “Whether it is how our medicine is cultivated, or how it is packaged — we are continuously developing more environmentally friendly solutions.”

Until now, most medical cannabis has been packaged in plastic. OrganiCann’s new packaging protects the quality and integrity of its medicine, while eliminating unnecessary plastic waste. Unlike many compostable packages that require the high heat and pressure of commercial compost facilities, OrganiCann’s packaging will safely biodegrade in home compost. Patients who don’t live in neighborhoods with commercial composting can place the packages in home compost piles where they typically biodegrade in just a few weeks.

“OrganiCann gave us a very clear mandate. Produce a design that first and foremost protects the medicine, but that also has the least environmental impact possible,” said Glenn Martinez, Co-Founder of Branditecture, the branding agency that developed the packaging.

OrganiCann offers home compostable packaging for a full range of products from dry cannabis and joints to concentrates and even cannabis-infused teas.

“Home compostable packaging is just one part of our overall sustainability effort,” says Frank. “We look at everything we do and ask ourselves, 'how can we do it greener?'.”
