TOUCHING/觸動

Creative Agency: ANGLE visual integration
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Baroque Camerata
Location: Taiwan
Packaging Contents: CD
Packaging Substrate / Materials:

When Teresa Teng's Oriental style old songs "encounter" Western classical music, the original meaning of the lyrics are infused into the melody of the song, while also retaining the essence of the melody. Art resulting from such an interweaving of the classical and the modern reintroduces Teresa Teng's music in all its elegance!

The oil painting of the album cover design uses multiple layers of color stacked upon each other to create a rich unique characteristic, and serves as a metaphor of new and old genres of music and philosophies overlapping each other. In addition, the unique nature of a painting corresponds with the timelessness of Teresa's music. To correspond with the name of the album, "Contact", a texture and sense of touch was added, allowing the music to not only be heard but also felt. Therefore, the notes of the music sheet printed on the clear casing have a degree of thickness, that can be felt to feel the temperature of the music. The same concept also extends to the random arrangement of transparent lamination in the lyrics book.

Salute to BACH - Brandenburg Concertos No.3 5 6

Creative Agency: ANGLE visual integration
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Location: Taiwan
Packaging Contents: CD

The Brandenburg Concertos are amongst Bach's most famous orchestral compositions. Full of a wide spectrum of different instruments and magnificently daring in its combinations, the concertos are classics that continue to be well-received in the modern world, and are also widely regarded as the pinnacle compositions of the Baroque period. Baroque music mainly refers to a style of music which was became increasingly widespread during the Renaissance, and was a type of music which saw popularity before the spread of the Classical music style. Initially, Baroque was a term used in the field of architecture, and was only gradually adopted by the arts and music. Baroque music is characterized by its extravagance and a generous use of decorative notes. Baroque music typically contains short, strongly played rhythmic patterns, and elaborate melodies.

The picture on the cover of the album has been divided geometrically, and portions of Bach's portrait and marble slabs overlap and intersect each other have been divided once again, representing the magnificence and cadence of the music. In addition, the see-through outer case with the name of the album carefully engraved onto the exterior, appear as gold-engraved text found in court buildings. Thus creating an effect that is extravagant and exquisite, yet not overly assertive, allowing one to indulge in a noble yet tasteful banquet of music.

Hamilton De Holanda E O Baile Do Almeidinha

Creative Agency: Human Design & Comunication
Graphic Designer and Creative Director: Enio Souza
Illustrator: Paulo Brabo
Planner: Daniel Bileski
Project Coordinator: Marcos Portinari
Client: Hamilton de Holanda
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Location: Curitiba, Brasil
Packaging Contents: Music CD
Packaging Materials: Paper - Cover and Booklet

Character conception, illustration and identity design for Baile do Almeidinha ("Almeidinha's Ball"), an instrumental music event promoted by Hamilton de Holanda. Holanda is a Brazilian musician who is considered one of the world’s greatest mandolin players of all time.

The challenge was to give life to Almeidinha, a fictitious mandolin player and dancer, created by Hamilton and his producer, Marcos Portinari. Their intent is to rescue the culture of Rio’s “gafieira,” traditional balls in the historic region of the city. The character needed to be unique and capture all the colors, movement, joy and lightness of the ball.

Using only illustrations, the identity also includes a typical "gafieira" scene, with some famous Rio de Janeiro landmarks in the background. Incorporating the same illustration style, all the band’s musicians were also included in the scene.

The concert-ball takes place every month at Circo Voador ("Flying circus"), a legendary local venue. The album, which celebrates two years of public and critical acclaim, was simultaneously released in Brazil and Germany in 2015 and was also nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards.

I am grateful to have been blessed with the opportunity to experience the various aspects of what Western and Chinese cultures have to offer. As different as they may be, I identify with both and have had the chance to see the best of both worlds. Ultimately, I view myself as a world citizen and with this album, my vision was to create something that would best represent my musical experiences and be a reflection and fusion of different inspirations and cultures. Within the brand new material, I have also had many ideas and fragments of creativity over the years that I have collected for the suitable project. JTW is the first album under my new independent label and I would like to thank all of the collaborators, artists and musicians who contributed to this body of work. The album is also for all of the fans who have supported me throughout the years. Thank you for embarking on this journey. - Soulboy

Alt-J Album Cover - Heroes On Mars (Student Project)

Designer: Marion Fagnot
Project Type: Student Project
Location: Paris, France
Packaging Contents: CD

Alt-J are an English indie rock band formed in 2007 in England by 4 musicians who met at art school for three of them.

The band's symbol is the delta sign, Δ, which is traditionally used in scientific study to indicate "change" or "difference". However it’s pronounced “alt-J” because if you press alt + j on a Mac computer you get the symbol ∆.

For this new album "Heroes on Mars", it was important to stay in the graphic universe of the group. This universe is developed around the art and painting. Therefore, starting from the theme of the planet Mars, I created a texture resembling Mars and I used the triangle symbol to remind the group logo.

Designer: Ernesta Vala
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Lithuanian neo folk band Skyle and Aiste Smilgeviciute
Location: Vilnius, Lithuania
Packaging Contents: CD, book, string
Packaging Materials: Paper, string

The brief was to create minimalistic and premium design for a new music album "Wolf Gates". The design elements should connect with neo folk style and culture, take influence from Baltic and Scandinavian mythology, especially Valhalla.

The concept came from the band insight about the meaning of the gates in their album. The symbol of “Wolf gates” continue to appear in all album songs. The band

described it as an unavoidable path of all human beings when a man has to enter different life stages and meet his own fears, personal metamorphosis, changes.

Usually, it's an unpleasant and scary times, because it is unknown and mystic. In design process we coded a man’s life as a line where he is a master to pull the string how he wants. In the end we have two music album covers for mass production and limited edition. In both designs you can create your own visual with added string, while connecting the holes.

Adding the Sage’s "passion for the software" and the offer of Garrofé Brand&Pack's new formats, an unsurpassable result has been obtained: a complete series of innovative packaging, with a unified image but, at the same time, differentiated by product groups, Thanks to this exposition, the new packaging supposes an experience for the client. On the other hand, given the great importance that the client grants to the environmental preservation, the packaging have reduced its size notably and there has been use recycled papers for its production, guaranteeing this way an important saving of material and of space in the linear one of sale. To reduce the packaging was a risky decision, because of the standardization of sizes that rules the current market. Only a company like Sage could do it, because the leaders always stand out for their great capacity of risk and innovation.

As result, the new packaging, more than thirty in total, have the power to guarantee the leader's image of Sage and of separating it from a competition that continues using packaging of great size in relation to the content. Cinema Paradiso (Student Work)

Designed by Nitin Budhiraja, Savannah College of Art and Design, United States.

Cinema paradiso is a nostalgic film that evokes a feeling of love and passion through the bonds that the characters share and the simple lifestyles of Sicilians. The music is a masterpeice in its own right, and so this package takes parts of the movie as key points to garner a sense of warm antiquity.

Treatment of regular office supply paper, a regular tin film holder can, and other materials, helped in communicating the message across to the audience. Various unconventional methods were incorporated to achieve the desired aged look for the materials (including tea water, coffee and heat sources to name a few.)

Typography is researched and the elements developed with great detail to originality and authenticity.

Zinkplaat - Mooi Besoedeling

Designed by Fanakalo, South Africa.

Zinkplaat is an Afrikaans pop-rock-blues-fusion band from South Africa. The name Zinkplaat is the Afrikaans word for corrugated metal.

This, their fourth album comes shrink-wrapped with a scratch-off ink layer on the front and back, as well as a guitar pick to scratch the ink off with.

The album’s name ‘Mooi Besoedeling’ translates to ‘Beautiful Polution’. We believe this is a very good functional solution to the fact that a simplistic clean cd cover design stands out most from all the clutter on a store shelf, yet is very boring once bought. However one wants to read the album as a concept, people seem to love the scratch-off part…

Cern - Terminus

Designed by Marx Design, New Zealand.

Artwork for drum and base albums has long since fallen into a formula of pixel fonts and industrial design but the problem with that is the music has moved on. Our approach was to embrace the surreal moodiness of Terminus, by creating six provocative airbrushed illustrations, all cropped in the iconic die-cut window of the cover. This gave fans the opportunity to slide in their preferred cover.

Immortal Water

Designed by Beach Packaging Design, United States.
The Greek expression “annabouboula” means a confusing noise that aouses passion. We present to you a collection of Greek songs, some old and some new, that convey our confusion and our passion. Our confusion is an ingredient of our identities: Greeks of the Diaspora dreaming of the Greece of a recent past that no longer exists (if indeed it ever existed), as we confront the Greece of the present. Our passion is the main ingredient of Immortal Water, a life-giving potion that flows from the soul and is a distillation of all the varied music we love. We all imagine ourselves, and this is the modern Greek music of our imaginations.

For our part we tried to incorporate the style of vintage ouzo packaging and the many layers of meaning contained in the title of the title track--a cover Marika Papagika’s 1928 recording of a traditional karsilamas 9/8 folk tune of Greek Asia Minor...

“From your sweet eyes, aman aman, immortal water does run; And I asked you for a little bit, aman aman, and to drink you gave me none” Aidhinikos Horos (The Magic Fountain of Your Eyes)

- Annabouboula
