P Around

Designed by Prompt Design, Thailand.

In 2010 a new brand and style of stationary was launched under the name P Around. P Around is inspired by the idea that ideas are all around us. The concept of the brand is to create functionality and beauty through the product’s intended use. Take for example the intended use of an eraser is to erase; this functionality influenced the design of its packaging, the patterns on the packing are made by erasing material to create interesting graphics. This concept is repeated throughout the brand; the patterns on the A4 paper are designed to mimic folding a sheet of paper, the packing of pencils are decorated with drawings created with that weight of pencil. Using the product within the packing to create the packing differentiates P Around from their competitors. Plans exist to use this idea to market other products such as scissors and glue as part of the P Around brand.

Eraser Packaging is simple and unique packing hides a deeper understanding of each product. The simplicity of design and the usability of the product combine to make an everyday object into a unique and fun product. Erasers have function which is to remove/ erase. The design on the packaging is made by removing material communicating how well the P Around eraser functions. An issue that was important to address when designing this packaging was the shrinking size of the eraser. Through use the eraser gets smaller and smaller yet the packaging remains the same size. Eventually the packaging is thrown away because its practicality lessens as the difference in the size of the eraser and the packing grows. Sticking with the idea that remove of material, the packaging of the P Around eraser is perforated with lines of small dots making it easy to change the amount of packaging to match the size of the eraser.

The goal of the P Around brand is to appeal to teenagers and recent graduates who are striving to promote their individuality by using uniquely made products.

Five Point Art Supplies (Student Work)

Gloss and matte fixative, presentation and premium paper, chalk pastel, rubber cement, B series pencils, swatch book

Designed by Ryan Bosse, a student at Fort Hays State University in Hays KS, United States.

Five Point art supplies are art products that appeal to the 20 to 40 year old artist. The in-store idea is that the detailed design will immediately catch the eye of any artist, being that every artist is detail oriented in someway. I wanted the design to be unique enough that no matter what isle in the store, when you see the elaborate design you automatically relate it to the great product you bought from Five Point previously, and therefore are inclined to buy more of the product.

The concept: Art is something that leads you through life and makes you look at it in a different perspective than anyone else.

The ribbon represents a conceptual path and visual one, leading you from the logo to the name of the product. The illustration literally represents a variety of perspectives.

Hue (Student Work)

Designed by Vanessa Wainwright, a graphic design student at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, United States.

The idea behind Hue is to educate people on the use and theory behind color. Hue was created because artists need to have a better understanding of not only how to use color, but where it comes from and what it means. Hue educates students and professionals on the essential facts and uses of color through five different artist products. Each product would be used differently, but the effect of color is the same. Hue takes a new approach on packaging information to artists and how they use the tools they are given.

Paint Pens (Student Work)

Designed by Evan Farrell, a senior at Savannah College of Art and Design(SCAD) studying Graphic Design, United States.

Create packaging for a small product of your choosing. I packaged paint pens concealed in an inconspicuous book. I introduced the paint pens as weapons because in many ways a "weapon" can act as a metaphor for an artists tool of choice. The paint pens are "weapons" for artists, not necessarily for physical destruction, but as tools of ones self expression. My book has a clear vacuum foamed piece of plastic that securely holds each paint pen. This feature displays paint pens and a piece of graffiti art behind the products.

The eBay Box

Designed by  Office, San Francisco, United States.

eBay just launched a new set of reusable boxes as part of a pilot program to make shipping a little greener. Starting in October, the company is giving away 100,000 shipping boxes to eBay sellers, and encouraging reuse. According to eBay, if each box gets used five times, the program could protect nearly 4,000 trees, save 2.4 million gallons of water, and conserve enough electricity to power 49 homes for a year.

Designed by San Francisco-based Office, the boxes engage sellers by emphasizing potential benefits to the planet with friendly illustrations and copy. Tips for greener packing include finding "a new calling for old phone books." A happy little bird asks, "Where to next?" And to track each box's journey, there's space to write a note so the next person to receive it can see just how far its come.

Each eBay Box is made with 100 percent recycled content, printed with water-based inks, and designed to require minimal tape. And once it reaches the end of its useful shipping life, it's fully recyclable. From the box's fine print: "Don't worry, it will come back as something nice, like a birthday card or movie theater popcorn bag.

HP Ink Refill (Student Work)

Designed by Carli Shipley, United States.

In efforts to reuse, versus recycle, I designed a package that would enable the HP Ink consumer to send back their empty ink cartridge in the self addressed, same box that the new ink cartridge is bought in. Conceptually, HP would start a “refilling” option, where the user would order their next cartridge online ahead of time and receive a discount by entering a the code found on the box.

I chose to use recycled chipboard as my material and to screen print the graphics (using only process inks cyan, magenta, yellow and black).

The ink cartridges are packaged separately, allowing the consumer to purchase only the ink that is empty – Black or CMY. The package also provides a simple and quick solution for recycling empty ink cartridges.
